Calm Integration
NuCalm was a standalone Multicloud Application Management Tool that was acquired by Nutanix. To fully integrate it into the Nutanix product ecosystem, it needed a full redesign using our Prism Design Language.
Role
- Lead visual and interaction designer in charge of collaborating with the original NuCalm team to transition their product into Nutanix.
- Worked cross-functionally with internal product, engineering and UX designers.
- Identified common ground between their product and our design library and places that would require bespoke work.
- Designed new components and custom elements specific to the needs of the new tool.
Opportunities
- I wanted to ensure current users would continue to feel comfortable with the product they were familiar with, while making sure onboarding felt natural for first-time users who were used to the Nutanix ecosystem.
- For patterns that did not fit neatly into Nutanix (e.g. their main navigation was quite different, and many features were completely new like the Blueprint Manager and App Store), I created custom components that would partner seamlessly with our design system while solving for the needs of the new tool.
- NuCalm was acquired with a full team of developers and one designer. To ensure they felt welcomed and integrated into our team well, I spoke with them a lot to understand their current processes and pain points, and made sure I was always treating their product with respect and kindness.
Results
- Nutanix Calm was released as an integrated product of Prism, the flagship Nutanix product. For the redesign/ingegration, original users reported feeling at home in the new ecosystem.
- To ease the transition, I created an onboarding tour to introduce users to the new features and new ways of accomplishing their tasks.
- I created a complete visual library of all the newly designed components which was added to our main design system so they could be easily reused for future products.
